Psychedelic Funk: A New Layer of Funk

Psychedelic Funk can be seen as a fusion of Funk and Psychedelic Rock. This makes it particularly unique, because it adds textures and themes that make the typical rhythms of funk much wilder and more atmospheric. It is well worth it to explore, especially for those interested in recapturing the spirit of the late 1960s and 1970s.

The best album to get into Psychedelic Funk might be Mothership Connection (1975) by Parliament. The great funk and experimental psychedelic instruments stand for the typical sound of the genre which is presented in one of its highest quality ways on this album. But perhaps the one blueprint album of the genre is Maggot Brain (1971) by Funkadelic. Especially the 10 minute long title track with what might be one of the best guitar solos of all time is legendary. It is being said that Eddie Hazel was told to play as if his mother just died and the result is a very deep, emotional and psychedelic piece of art.

If you like unique guitars and synthesizers and an overall psychedelic, experimental atmosphere, Psychedelic Funk can be a genre well worth exploring. In the 1970s there was a creative explosion that created an immense repertoire of songs, many of which totally unknown to this day. The newsletter will highlight some of these rarities to uncover songs that deserve more spotlight.
